While we were in the South we were educated on Barbeque.
Cali folk, WE DO NOT BARBEQUE- we grill. Yes, Ma'am.
"Grilling is a quick, hot fling with a hamburger or hot dog. Barbequing is a long-term relationship. You have to spend a lot of time rubbing spices into a rack of ribs or a pork shoulder. Then you spend hours over a smokey fire. It's a lot like making love."
In the words of Ricky Dee's son-in-law, "Spooner" (Spinner), "He barbequed it 'All Night Long' like Lionel Richie."
In the a.m. Ricky Dee had a fling with some ribs, which he smoked for a few hours before steaming them in foil (pronounced "foi'l"). The ribs were exquisite and melted in the mouth!
He finished the meal off with some veggies from his unbelievable garden (tomatoes, corn, potatoes, onion, zucchini, yellow squash, cucumber, blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, pumpkin, and more). This sweet corn was to die for!
Mmmm, mmmm!
Folks in the South smother their barbeque in BBQ sauce. I drenched mine with Margarete sauce. Ginger's brother's sauce of choice is the "mutard sauce" (mustard), because "it'll make yer tongue smack yer brain."
And here's a little heads up- people in the South take their love make'n... err.. barbeque seriously! They have differing opinions on what to barbeque, how to barbeque, and what sauce to smother it in. Yes, Ma'am.
The following video is a hoot, and will help you to not offend BBQ-love'n Southern folks.
Our Southern feast was made complete with a
heaping servings of
Strawberry Shortcake (made with Pat's Pound Cake), and Chocolate Delight,
which was so "delightful" that I may have entered into a wicked relationship with it and had not one but two whopping servings
(it was Emilie's 14th birthday, and she was in CA and I was in NC and I missed her
and sensed she WANTED me to inhale Chocolate Delight for her, too).
How do you eat yer BBQ?
